The City & Spitalfields

This trail takes you on a tour of The City where you can enjoy the traditional charm of the Williams, a stones throw from vibrant Spitalfields. From the Williams head off to The Railway Tavern where you have a choice of three bars to enjoy a pint of IPA or Speckled Hen Gold. Next port of call is London’s first non smoking pub, the Phoenix, and a warm welcome awaits at the end of the trail, The Old Tea Warehouse, for a pint of London Glory on the secluded patio.

Railway Tavern

15 Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, London, EC2M 7NX.
More info

It is believed that there has been an ale house on the site of the Railway Tavern since the first half of the 18th century. The story goes that farmers bought cows to the outskirts of the city and herded them into Liverpool Street, with the pub gaining the nickname “The Cow Shed”. Nowadays, the pub is frequented by city workers and provides a handy stop off on the way to the station, for a pint of cask ale and some decent pub food. We also have Sky sports (so are perfect for those big games) and our famous Friday night karaoke every week until midnight.

Phoenix

25 Throgmorton Street, Whitechapel, London, EC2N 2AN.
More info

Standing in a listed building, the Phoenix used to be (quite appropriately for the area) a bank. The Phoenix is proud to be famous for being Londons first non-smoking pub. It was re-launched as “The Phoenix” to signify the Phoenix rising from the ashes in December 2003, well in advance of the 2007 smoking ban for England & Wales. Whilst smoking in pubs is now a thing of the past, our range of cask ales and hearty pub food is bang up to date.

Nearby attractions include 15The Bank of England, 18Leadenhall Market, 17The Monument, 13The Barbican, and 11St Paul's Cathedral.

Old Tea Warehouse

4, 6 8 Creechurch Lane, London, London, EC3A 5AY.
More info

The site of the Old Tea Warehouse is surrounded by religious history and can be traced back as far as 1592, where the Creechurch Monastery once stood. Indeed it is said that upon renovation of the site, old bones were found and the original East India Co Tea Warehouse was believed to be built on a graveyard. Located in EC3, which was the original City of London often referred to as the Square Mile, The Old Tea Warehouse was converted into a pub from an East India Tea Company Warehouse in 1996. Rumour has it that tea was found in the floorboards, used as insulation!
